Anxiety is supposed to be a natural reaction to stress in our environment, which can be physical, emotional, or chemical. This adaptive response serves dual purposes – helping us detect and avoid potential threats, and serving as motivation to better a situation.
Unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to manage anxiety appropriately, and that’s especially true in our overly-scheduled, overly-busy lives. Between meetings, relationships, traffic, negative media, finances, and our own busy schedules, it’s understandable that the majority of us lead stressful lives, and chronic anxiety is an unpleasant side effect.
More than a quarter of American adults in the United States have anxiety disorders, and many turn to pharmaceuticals for help. From Prozac and Zoloft to Valium and Xanax, these drugs can run the gamut from ineffective to downright addictive.
So how about an alternative?
The Role of CBD
Cannabidiol is the non-psychoactive compound in cannabis, and research links it to a wealth of wonderful benefits – reduced cancer cell growth, fewer seizures and convulsions in children, a drop in inflammation and pain for various ailments. According to leafly.com, growing evidence seems to suggest CBD could be a powerful aid against anxiety. Results from a range of studies – including animal, human experimental, clinical and epidemiological – suggest that CBD taken as needed for anxiety is safe and effective for a plethora of anxiety-related disorders, from post-traumatic stress to panic to mild and moderate depression, among others.
Here’s how it seems to work.
Some medications work by targeting the serotonin system, which encourages the brain to reduce anxiety and improve mood. While research confirming this is still in its infancy, CBD may also target serotonin receptors – and it may affect them faster than traditional medications.
Human studies and anecdotal evidence are beginning to substantiate the idea that CBD is a safe, well-tolerated, non-addicting treatment for a range of anxiety disorders.
