Cannabis in the Morning

Waking and baking is a morning ritual for a lot of people — close to one quarter of all U.S. cannabis consumers indulge within the first ten minutes of their day, according to a 2017 Global Drug Survey. And there may be something to it, even if you prefer to avoid intoxication first thing in the morning. The addition of CBD to your morning coffee, yogurt bowl, oatmeal, or a smoothie can help you start the day at your best — relaxed but focused, with a supplemental boost of endocannabinoids. Here’s why cannabis in the morning can be an excellent way to kick off your day.

The Endocannabinoid System

You may have a passing familiarity with the human endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for the ebb and flow of a number of physiological responses. These include, among others:

  • Pain and inflammation
  • Appetite
  • Energy
  • Metabolism
  • Sleep health
  • Stress responses
  • Mood
  • Memory
  • Muscle control

Cannabinoid receptors in the body are categorized into two main types — CB1 and CB2. The former is associated with THC’s intoxicating, euphoric effects, while the latter is associated with decreased inflammation and tissue injury, as well as improvements to energy balance, satiety, metabolic health, and insulin stability. While the purpose of the endocannabinoid system is to respond to cannabinoids produced within one’s body, it will also recognize and respond to those that are introduced from outside sources.

That’s a big deal. The National Institute of Health notes that the introduction of cannabidiol, or CBD, can be effective in treating a number of different health issues ranging from anxiety and acne to depression and nausea.
The body’s endocannabinoid system’s chief role is helping the body maintain balance. Supplementing with a high-quality CBD oil can help keep all of those physiological responses — mood, sleep, appetite, immune response, and many others — running smoothly.
