Terpenes, you’ll recall, are abundantly found in cannabis plants. These aromatic compounds underpin the diversity of tastes and scents from one strain to the next. There are more than 200 terpenes produced in cannabis plants, in varying amounts.
Cannabinoids are another class of chemicals, and arguably this is a more unique grouping. Some of them – notably THC and CBD – are exclusively found in cannabis. And it’s these compounds that are responsible for the unique effects of cannabis, whether that’s psychoactivity or pain relief.
The big difference between terpenes and cannabinoids is how they affect the body. While cannabinoids like THC attach to cannabinoid receptors in the body to induce effects, most terpenes interact with different receptors. But interestingly, some terpenes are also classified as cannabinoids. Caryophyllene is known for its distinctive peppery/earthy scent and flavor, but it also binds right to those CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system.
